This career is the discipline and career of applying engineering concepts to the optimization of equipment, measures and departmental budgets to attain improved maintainability, dependability and availability of equipment. They shall have noteworthy awareness of statistics, probability and logistics. In addition to this he should also possess the knowledge in the basics of the operation of the equipment and machinery he or she is responsible for. It is also important to posses a very good interpersonal, communication and management skill. These roles are tenuously or on site repairing, servicing and maintaining machinery. They provide service to external as well as internal customers by giving advice either via the telephone or by visiting the factory. They are the ones who work out customary schedules for each part of equipment and carry out the work. They deal with emergency breakdowns as they occur and remove equipments to workshop as and when appropriate. They work under a great deal of pressure to get the equipments functional.
The key skills basically include a thorough understanding of the pertinent technology. She/he should possess good no-nonsense skills and a common-sense approach. The ability to work under enormous pressure is another key skill that a maintenance engineer should possess. For example, if an entire production line is shut down, she/he should possess the willingness to work unfriendly hours when required. She/he should also possess the tact, diplomacy and sense of humor necessary to deal with people in worrying situations and endow with positive guarantee. Self-confidence and the skill to work independently or as a team player are very important. Another important matter to be given due consideration is the training that has to be provided to the maintenance engineer. Training is pertinent to the equipment for which she/he has responsibility. Some of the engineers train to become chartered engineers and some other as incorporated engineers.
